If I were to build my resume I would probably do it online. This is because while creating my perfect resume I would also like to save up on time and resources. Yet, get an end product that is reliable and holds up in any HR office.
In this article you will find out what is the thought process of a professional (me) while making a resume. What are the exact reasons I would use an online approach? and The steps involved in making a resume online.
Let’s start with the thought process.
A professional resume writer’s thought process
If I want to build my resume I want it to be “ My Perfect Resume “. I would like it to have some defining features:
I would like it to
- be neat
- have a visual appeal that suits me and the job in question.
- have accurate formatting
- be properly sectioned and labelled
- highlight all my most noteworthy achievements
- have an attached Cover Letter
How to build my perfect resume
After the initial thought process I would assess my options of how to build my resume. 4 that come to mind that fulfil my initial criteria of what my perfect resume should look like.
Build my resume from scratch
I could start building my resume from the bottom up. I would have to create a resume template in word. Create proper sections to fill in the most relevant skills, work history etc. Type in aforementioned elements one by one taking care to prioritise the ones that are relevant to the job . Finally when I’m done I would have to convert that word document into the file format accepted by the HR department manually and then send it in. Not to mention if I want to attach a cover letter I would have to make sure that my template matches the one I used for the Resume. This is a long and tedious process. It would not be the best option if I want to make more than one resume.
Using a Resume Template
A resume template is the skeleton of a resume. This will allow me to use a ‘fill in the blanks” approach to building a resume. I will have the choice of what my Resume’s design will look like. Also, I could download the template and make my resume at my own leisure. I could decide on the sections and I can just type in what goes in and what stays out. A very useful tool indeed.
Building a Resume using Resume Template Online
Resume templates online more or less serve the same purpose as downloaded resumes. With the exception of the fact that, depending on the service provider, I will have access to extra tools to have better control of what my resume will look like. I could share the resume on any online platform as soon as I’m done via a link and I could download it in the file formats that are provided by the service.
Use a Resume Builder
Finally, I could use a Resume Builder to make my resume. A resume builder is a great option to make my resume because it’s easy to use and I can get quick results. A resume builder asks for the most basic information from its users and then compiles that to create a resume based on the most relevant elements to form a resume that can be edited by the user later.
If I had to choose one option to build my perfect resume I would choose the resume builder. Not only does it fulfil the criteria of my initial thought process but it is the best option when you consider the ratio of efforts to results.
Using a resume builder doesn’t require too much effort and I could get the same result, if not, better than the other options. Additionally, I would have a chance to see what my resume looks like with multiple templates before downloading, giving me creative freedom when it comes to the visuals of my resume.
If I use a resume builder, I could also use the same tech to create a matching cover letter or cover letters if I plan to apply for more than one job.
In short, A resume builder would be my choice when it comes to building my perfect resume as this would save me time, effort, would be properly formatted, allow me the choice of file format to download in and guarantee the most success.
